Giocoso string quartet play Mozart (The Hunt) and Beethoven (Opus 18 no. 6)

Mozart string quartet in Bb major. Vienna 1784
This is one of a set of 6 written in 1784, which Mozart dedicated to Haydn. The quartet begins with a hunt-like arpeggio call, which pervades the whole trilling and galloping first movement. The second movement, a Minuet, has a gracious gentle melody with weaving accompaniments. The third movement has plenty of imitation, and a beautiful haunting melody. The last movement brings us back to earth; it is a romp where everyone has a go, then ends with triumphant chords. We love it!

Beethoven's Op. 18 nr. 6 quartet has four movements.
The opening has a dynamic energy and drive. In the second movement there is a beautiful melodic line, whilst the third teases both the players and the listeners alike with its use of rhythm. Where is that beat? Then, a mysterious and melancholy start to the final movement, with unexpected harmonies, before this erupts into a lively dance.
There is something for everyone to enjoy in this amazing piece.
