Famous Fifty Exhibition on Saturday June 9th and Sunday June 10th The Dixie Grammar School 10-4pm

The "Famous Fifty" were specially selected volunteers from the Coalville area of Leicestershire who went to fight on the Western Front in 1914. Due to their mining background many of the men became tunnellers, only 22 ever returned home. The Famous Fifty Exhibition comprises fifty life sized wooden soldiers each representing one of the lads from the Coalville area who volunteered in 1914. Each ‘soldier’ was assigned to a local group, school or church to research the volunteer’s life and decorate as they wished.

It is a moving memorial to these fifty brave young men, only 22 of whom came back.
