George Eliot was born Mary Ann Evans in a farm near Nuneaton in 1819. Lovers of English literature will know her work such as “Middlemarch” and “The Mill on the Floss “ which are just two of the many literary masterpieces of her writing career.

Many people will not appreciate, however, that she was radical in her views both politically and socially mixing with some of the greatest intellectuals of the day, including Charles Darwin, Karl Marx and Charles Dickens. Her spiritual beliefs and private life were somewhat colourful to say the least, causing both outrage and scandal in Victorian English society but love of her work would eventually overwhelm many of these prejudices. By the time she died in 1880, she had become the richest and most successful, self-made women in the country with her work celebrated across the world.

Now is a chance to meet this extraordinary woman through a monologue by Historian Lesley Smith and to discover for yourself how truly remarkable she was.LesleySmith600.jpg

The research for Lesley’s portrayal of the author was supported by the George Eliot Fellowship to mark the bicentenary of her birth.
